On Monday the fashion industry lost one of its greats, and a true living legend, Oscar de la Renta.
His career unofficially began at the young age of 19, when he started drawing clothes for newspapers and fashion houses to make extra money while at university in Spain. This work led to an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, who became his mentor. De la Renta's career started to take off in 1961, when he became a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris.
