MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ALEX ROSAS

With more than twenty years of experience over three continents, Alex Rosas has had his work featured in GQ UK, Vogue Australia, Cleo Magazine, Emporium Magazine, Kaltblut Magazine, En Vie Magazine, Elegant Magazine, and Paper Cut Magazine, among others. He has also worked runway shows for Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney, David Jones S/S Fashion Launch, and Myer A/W Fashion Launch. Additionally, Alex has worked extensively with global cosmetics brands Shu Uemura and M.A.C.

Aside from makeup artistry, Alex's other passions include lying on tropical beaches, dressing age inappropriately, and small hairless dogs!

Who is your favorite makeup artist of all time?

Kevyn Aucoin for being one of the true trailblazers of modern makeup artistry. Roshar for his creativity and vision, and Stephen Dimmick for his support of me and the sharing of his knowledge.

What inspires you?

Historical figures. I'm obsessed with Lola Montes and Marie Antoinette. Pedro Almodovar movies for their riot of color, and Gyaru makeup from Asia.

What is your personal style?

I love color, animal print, Disney references, Jeremy Scott, Discount Universe and Rubén Galarreta.

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

Great skin, expressive eyes, and charisma.

What genre does your work focus on?

Beauty, as it gives me the opportunity to really showcase my work and technique.  

HAIR STYLIST OF THE MONTH: ANITA ARSOVA

For Anita, hair and makeup has always served as a creative outlet for her thoughts, emotions and imagination.  Her diverse portfolio is steeped in the philosophy that hair and makeup is an art form.  Versatile and detail-driven, Anita's work seeks to find harmony between the beautiful and the surreal.  As a fully certified cosmetologist and makeup artist based in Chicago, Anita's clients are as diverse and unique as her work.  Among her specialties, some highlights include fashion shows, photography, television, film, weddings and other special occasions.  Anita also provides lessons on proper makeup application.

WARDROBE STYLIST OF THE MONTH: WILFORD LENOV

Wilford Lenov was born and raised in one of the fashion capitals of the world - Los Angeles.  However, his personal sense of style reaches beyond his immediate locale, as well as our current time period.  His inspiration is a potpurri consisting of sources such as Japan, classic styles, west coast fashion and music that makes you feel fun and flirty.  His aesthetic is best described as "clean, classic chic but conceptual."

Wilford also loves soft, feminine looks as portrayed by designers such as Lanvin, Chanel and Roberto Cavali.  When working, he takes direction well in order to achieve the goal of the project while putting his own touch when necessary.

David Harrington is a creative force in the entertainment and salon industries, having styled for fashion greats such as Gucci, Escada and worked as a personal stylist for many celebrities. His artistry has been showcased on runways, Entertainment Tonight, Flawless Magazine, Univision, and the British GQ Awards, to name a few. Locally, his print work has been highlighted in Los Angeles Fashion Magazine. He has worked with a diverse clientele over the years in London, New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, and is now sharing his talent and vision with Los Angeles.

Why hair styling?

Since I was 14 I was interested in hair. It is all about creating a look for someone.

Vidal Sassoon

What inspires you?

Fashion is my biggest inspiration. The hair and makeup complete the look.

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

I really don't select the models, the photographer, producer or designer does. I look at the hair and looks that we are doing and focus on how to create the look.

What product can you not live without?

A great hairspray and a great styling wax or paste.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

I worked on a desert shoot with a French actress. The wardrobe stylist was from Paris and had a great sense of style. It was so much fun.

What is your personal style?

It depends on the day. I can go classic to jeans and t-shirt - all about the mood.

What genre does your work focus on?

Editorial and beauty, but I love it all.

What is your favorite band, musician or song of all time?

MODEL OF THE MONTH: EVE MAURO

Eve Mauro is a Sicilian-American actress and fashion model. Born to a Sicilian father and a Russian mother, Mauro is the youngest of six siblings. She moved from Orlando, FL to Los Angeles at the age of 21 and began her acting and modeling career.

Mauro is a supporter of four charities: Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Save the Children, and Susan G. Komen Cure for Cancer.

She is currently repped by DT Models in Los Angeles.

Who is your favorite model of all time?

My favorite model of all time would be Laetitia Casta. She exudes great sexual confidence and has a timelessness about her.

What inspires you?

Life inspires me. Everything, anything, you name it. If you search for inspiration you can find it in whatever you want.

What do you look for when selecting a photographer to work with?

I suppose I look for a similar vision. Someone who is also pleasant to work with.

What is your favorite project that you have worked on?

Working with Ellen Von Unwerth for Sang Bleu Magazine and her book would have to be some of my favorite projects. She was so creative, fun, and natural. 

What is your personal style?

My style is very simple. I mostly wear a black tank top, jeans, and boots with a leather jacket. Accessories are optional. I supposed if you had to put my style in a category, it would be rocker biker chic.

What is your favorite band or song of all time? 

My favorite song of all time would be Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. I've probably played it a million times. My favorite band of all time is Nine Inch Nails. Their album Broken is my favorite for sure.

Veronika Gant is originally from Slovakia and her life is all about art. She has learned more about wedding photography since moving to the U.S. and has started working as a newborn photographer as well. She is a versatile photographer, who is able to step in and do hair, makeup and wardrobe styling for her shoots if needed!

Veronika shot campaigns for radio station EUROPA 2 and GOSH Cosmetics in Slovakia and also worked with Exit Model Management modeling agency.

I did pictures for my good friend and the next day I deleted them from my memory card and forgot to download them to my laptop. 

MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE MONTH: COURTNEY HAGEN

Courtney's love for the world of beauty started very early on when she first discovered Kevyn Aucoin's book, The Art of Makeup. He inspired her to make over anyone who would sit in front of her and she quickly fell in love with the power that makeup had to transform people both physically and emotionally. Eager to turn her passion into a career, she left her Midwest roots and made the move to California where she attended the Empire Academy of Makeup to hone her skills as a professional makeup artist.

Courtney began her career in Los Angeles working for Urban Decay cosmetics, but it wasn't until she began to freelance on numerous editorial shoots, corporate videos, indie films, runway shows, and red carpet events, that she developed her own signature style as an artist. Her clean, understated beauty aesthetic, combined with her down-to-earth attitude has clients coming back time and time again. Courtney's love and excitement for the beauty world is infections and is instantly apparent to anyone who steps into her chair.

Why makeup artist?

Growing up, I was actually quite shy and makeup helped me to come out of my shell. I discovered that when I put it on, I immediately felt more confident and outgoing around others. It was an emotional transformation as much as it was a physical one. My attitude changed, my body language changed, and I suddenly felt like I could take on the world. that feeling became addictive and I couldn't wait to get other women in my chair to share the same excitement.

Who is your favorite makeup artist of all time?

Kevyn Aucoin. I know it is such a cliche answer, but it's true. My aunt picked up one of his books for me when I was young and I was absolutely enamored by the images. That book became my bible. I studied it and read through it hundreds of times. His images are so iconic and beautiful and demonstrated the power makeup had to completely transform someone. He made me realize makeup was a true art form and one you could make a living doing. Not only was he gifted, but he seemed so humble and kind as well, something you don't always see in the beauty world.

As far as makeup artists today go, I am obsessed with Mary Phillip's work. She makes her clients' skin look so fresh and flawless without caking on tons of product. Her work on Jennifer Lopez is so much fun to watch because she plays with so many different looks yet still manages to put the JLo spin on it.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by other artists' work. I could spend hours scouring Instagram looking at images. There are just so many talented MUA's on there! I'm inspired by badass femaile entrepreneurs. I just finished reading #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso and The Glitter Plan by the Juicy Couture creators, and I couldn't be more motivated. I love people who make something out of nothing. I love surrounding myself with other artists and visionaries who have big dreams and endless passion. Those people keep me going. I'm inspired by people who don't take "no" for an answer and know how to ask for what they want. I'm inspired by my Mom, who has mastered the art of tough love. And Los Angeles - I love this city and it never ceases to amaze me.

What product can you not live without?

I cannot live without my Graftobian HD cream foundation. It feels like butter and blends like a dream on the skin. I use it as a foundation as well as an under eye concealer. And I most definitely cannot live without my eyelash extensions!! They save me so much time and make me feel so glamorous at all times.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

My favorite project was actually a look book shoot for a handmade, earth friendly clothing line called Where Clothes. It was shot in Cape Cod over a weekend and there were like 10 girls there holed up together in the house where we were shooting. Normally when you get that many females together, drama is always bound to happen, but they were the most amazing, inspiring group of women and I left feeling like I had a new family. It was such a crazy bonding experience filled with intimate sharing, burnt nachos, and a scavenger hunt in a scary abandoned home. Meeting people like that is why I love my job so much.

What genre(s) does your work focus on?

I definitely do a lot of editorial work. I love the freedom you have to experiment with the makeup. It's always more fun when you are able to be creative. I love when the hair, makeup, wardrobe, and lighting all come together to create an interesting story and the photographer is able to capture that. Every time I see the images from a shoot I did, it feels like Christmas morning. There is nothing like it. 

HAIR STYLIST OF THE MONTH: MITZI SPALLAS

Being nominated for Hairstylist of the Year and Makeup Artist of the year for 2003 by the International Photographers Association, and winning the prestigious "Lucie Award" for Hairstylist of the Year, Mitzi Spallas has come full circle in the world of beauty. Beginning her career as a hairdresser in the late 1980's on the East Coast, Mitzi worked her way up to become one of the five members of the artistic council for Zotos International, a team of top hair stylists from around the world who would dictate the next season's beauty trends. 

Her freelance career started out strong when she met punk rock legend Billy Idol, who she can still count as a steady client after 20 years. Working with Billy introduced her to some of the best photographers and directors in the business, such as director David Fincher and photographer Anton Corbin early in her career. 

WARDROBE STYLIST OF THE MONTH: TIM BARRON

Tim Barron knew from a young age that he wanted to be part of the fashion world and is always looking for ways to advance in the career he wants. He collaborates with talented teams to interpret fashion into images conveying a story; creating stunning editorials.

Barron is attracted to work that evokes a sense of dark and whimsical. He is always drawing inspiration from literature, film, and/or art and combining it with current fashion trends.

MODEL OF THE MONTH: ELLE WEST

Elle West is known for her professionalism amongst top clientele for print, editorial, commercial, TV, and fashion runway. She has appeared in magazines, commercials, other TV related programming, and is the face of campaigns and look books for designers and brands around the world. Grey Advertising, Saatchi & Saatchi, Anyone Collective, Duo Films, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Hearst Publications, and Condé Nast Publications represent only a handful of Elle's top clientele.

Who is your favorite model of all time?

Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by this big supermodel "Brooke Shields." I was compared to her a lot growing up as a "mini" Brooke Shields because we both got attention for our heavy eyebrows, dark hair, and blue eyes. Tons of other top models, such as Hilary Rhoda and Cara Delevingne, have followed in her footsteps by flaunting some wicked eyebrows. I was super excited when I finally had the opportunity to meet and work with Brooke on a TV show in NYC!

What do you look for when selecting a photographer to work with?

I always look at composition choices made by the photographers in their work (lighting, angle, and all-over style)... I consider lighting to be one of the most important things.

What is your personal style?

My style is very eclectic! I just go with my mood for the day... One of my favorites is a pair of short cut-off jean shorts and a loose t-shirt with a pair of low-heeled ankle boots. I also have a love for leggings, and I have a favorite pair of flat footed thigh-high boots that get worn regularly. One thing is for sure though, I design metal jewelry and can almost always be seen wearing one of my signature necklaces with any outfit! 

What genre does your work focus on?

I'm lucky that I can cross over to book work in both the fashion and commercial modeling worlds, and I love each of them equally! My experience is in print, editorial, beauty, runway, showroom, fit modeling, video (TV shows, commercials, industrials, etc.), and spokesmodeling. 

What is your most embarrassing moment professionally?

I was between shots on set with a stylist who was tucking in my shirt and reaching under my skirt to pull the shirttail down. This isn't the embarrassing part...I'm fairly desensitized to these sorts of "happenings" during a shoot. The embarrassing part is when she gave an extra tug, looked up at me, and said "oops." That's when I realized that she accidentally pulled my underwear down. I think, with her reaction, I was more embarrassed for her than myself! 

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE MONTH: JOHN HONG STUDIO

John Hong is a fashion photographer based in Santa Monica, CA. His visual development started with his father, who was a photojournalist and fine art gallery owner in Korea. John strives to provide authentic imagery in his fashion stories.

Who is your favorite photographer of all time?

I love Greg Kadel's work.

What inspires you?

Beautiful ideas and inspiration come to mind when I mix creative friends and wine.

What kind of camera/equipment do you use?

I use various cameras that I've collected over the years. My primary fashion work camera equipment includes Hasselblad digital, Canon digital, and a large collection of 35mm and medium format film cameras. I love shooting film, so I always find a way to integrate both film and digital in my work.

What is your personal style?

Black shirt and denim.

What genre does your work focus on?

Fashion and beauty.

What is your favorite band or song of all time?

Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie are my favorite bands. 

MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ANGELIQUE CERNIGLIA

Angelique Cerniglia is a professional makeup artist based in Los Angeles whose love of color has whirled her into the world of fashion as well. The makeup palette was a very fitting inspiration for Angelique. "I've always loved to travel, experiencing new things...and always loved looking at fashion. Women all over the world want to feel and look confident in their appearance," she says. Angelique is compelled to apply her admiration for color, texture, and fashion trends to whatever "look" she is creating for a particular project. "When I was a kid, I used coloring books like crazy. Makeup and fashion melt into one another, I believe." Being true to the idea that confidence comes from within, so when you feel beautiful you exude that beauty, is definitely a strong motivation for this Atlanta-born makeup artist.

Why makeup artist?

I've always been attracted to color and have been all-around artistic since I was a little girl. I would obsess about having tons of coloring books and spent hours and hours coloring in them.

What product can you not live without?

I cannot live without my Laura Mercier foundation! It's very natural looking, smoothes out the skin tone without giving a cakey or heavy look. Looks very fresh and flawless!

What inspires you?

Fashion definitely inspires me, also color, art, and depending on the actual project I'm working on as to where I'll look for my inspiration.

What genre does your work focus on?

My work focuses mostly on beauty, editorial, and glamour, but I'm not just limited to those specific genres. I just love doing what I do, so as long as I'm doing makeup and transforming faces, I am content! 

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

It really depends on the specific project. For example, if it's a commercial print job, I look for someone that has that commercial look (girl-next-door type), and for fashion/editorial, it depends on the actual shoot and what the product or wardrobe is, and which particular model can pull it off. Of course, beautiful skin is a plus in my book! 

HAIR STYLIST OF THE MONTH: BRYAN GONZALEZ

Bryan Gonzalez is a hair stylist in NYC. He works for Cutler Salon and is working passionately toward his career as an editorial stylist.

What inspires you?

I get inspired by my client's personality. There is nothing like seeing someone enter a room with confidence owning an outfit because it's expressively suitable yet uniquely them. I find fashion in everything and am inspired by old movies and art that is seen within the world.

What is your favorite store to shop at or brand?

I don't have any particular brand or shop that I would consider my favorite. I love unique pieces but the brands normally range from high fashion to accessible fashion. I feel you get the most out of fashion when you mix the two. The designers I favor would range from Alexander McQueen to Top Shop.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

My favorite project that I have worked on was the Fantasia "Without Me" music video featuring Kelly Rowland. I had the opportunity to meet Jason Bolden. I love his styling techniques.

What is your personal style?

My personal style is very diverse. I mean, every day is different for me. It can range from classy to preppy to a relaxed hipster. Regardless of the theme of the day, it is always with an edge.

What genre does your work focus on?

I target celebrity styling for red carpet, editorials, and even their day-to-day wear, ensuring that they always look their best in case of paparazzi. The focus of Marcus Jai Enterprise is to change the lives of my clients one at a time by providing the diverse edge of fashion.

MODEL OF THE MONTH: NICK SABATALO

Nick Sabatalo is a 21 year old American model born in St. Simons Island, Georgia. He attended Ohio State University studying Business Marketing. 

Nick moved to Los Angeles last March to pursue his dream of modeling. A few weeks later, he was signed by his first LA agency and was walking in LA Fashion Week.

In May, Nick went international and modeled in Seoul, Korea for two months. Following that, he traveled to Italy and spent two months modeling in Milan.

Modeling has helped Nick discover a love of fashion and design, and he is currently working on his men's designer jean line, Forever Young (inspired by his first tattoo "Forever Young"). He plans to continue to pursue modeling and, with the help of his new manager, White Cross Productions, he will begin working on his craft as an actor in Los Angeles.

Nick also has a modeling blog at www.MyModelMentor.com that is meant to serve as a resource for young models and offers advice in the areas of modeling, fitness, nutrition, and fashion. 

Who is your favorite model of all time?

My favorite model of all time is  my good friend from high school, Taylor Kraemer. She's the reason I decided to model in the first place. I love her!

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by the desire to do what I love every day; I love being in front of the camera and I especially love getting back the final pics from a shoot. It's like being "immortalized" in that moment and those photos will be there forever. For me, it's the closest thing to immortality, but I'm still holding out hope that vampires are real!

What do you look for when selecting a photographer to work with?

Chemistry is everything between a photographer and a model. It's the only way to get a great shot! I could shoot with the best photographer in the world and if we aren't "vibing" and on the same page with each other's visions, then the best we can do is "good" and good just doesn't cut it in this industry. That's why I swear my best photos come from photographers who are my friends.

What is your favorite project that you have worked on?

My favorite project I've worked on was my shoot for Chronos Magazine in Korea. I love watches, and my favorite brand is Patek Philippe, but you could by a BMW for the price of their cheapest watch, so being able to wear one for the shoot was pretty cool. The team was also great and I actually became great friends with the editor of the magazine and the stylist. We still keep in touch. That's what I love about this industry - meeting new people and building relationships.

What is your personal style?

My style is pretty chill since I've moved to LA. Skinny-straight fit jeans and a v-neck with my brown leather bomber jacket is pretty typical, but I like to stand out with a pair of fashion-forward shoes. Right now my purple Cole Haans are getting a lot of compliments. Here's the think about fashion that I live by - less is more, but have one item that you want to shine!

What is your favorite band or song of all time?

My favorite song is Forever Young, and I like the version from Alphaville the best. Great quotes from the song: "Youth is like diamonds in the sun, and diamonds are forever," and "Let us die young or let us live forever."

Born in 1988, and after living in Mexico, Kentucky, and Texas, Jhonnatan and his family finally settled in Chicago. During grade school, he found that his biggest passions in life were music and art. He began college at 16, and during that time, started to get a better understanding of himself and his own work. Jhonnatan does not like having anything between his emotions and his work. He's been painting under his own techniques in abstract expressionism and has been working on perfecting it. Going into his third year of college, he decided to fully pursue photography and design on his won. He has started his own creative consulting company and is founder and editor of his own publication. Jhonnatan would like to admit that he's one of the coolest editors out there, but does confess that he has such complex grammar, that it automatically disqualifies him as cool. He always has a sense of nostalgia in his work. He also feels an almost obsessive need to juxtapose and contrast. Black and white over color any day!

Why photography?

We're the real life time travelers. We have these awesome little time machines that allow us to stop time and capture it. Sometimes I feel like a superhero when I do a good job.

Who is your favorite photographer of all time?

It's almost impossible to select just one photographer. There have been so many that have influenced me on so many levels. I do remember 3 photographers in specific that have had a major impact. The first is Ansel Adams - my dad loves him. Another is Herb Ritts. Although I didn't know until years later who he was, it was his True Blue series of Madonna that I felt so enamored by. (My mom loves Madonna.) Last but not least, Annie Liebovitz. It was during college that I discovered her work. I was struck by it. The impact was such that I felt I really understood the level of intimacy she created between us, her work, and her subject. It's so personal and intimate but doesn't leave anyone exposed. I also obsess with movement in photography and Margie Gillis by Annie Leibovitz in "Torn Roots, Broken Branches" hits the spot.

What inspires you?

Anything and everything, sometimes even nothing. I'm pretty observant and my mind is always running at a million miles per hour, so I'm always getting inspired. I think in this case, what motivates me is my purpose as an artist, which is having something to say and inspiring others to do the same. As to what I have to say? Many things. 

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

A good model is always pretty versatile and you can almost never guess who or how he/she really is, they're that good. The best models though, are pretty versatile but you can always tell who and how they really are. They're very transparent and they use their personality to connect with the photographer. I always try to achieve a level of intimacy between my work and the model. Usually, I try to determine who I can do that with by the expression in their eyes. That's why the first thing I look at is a model's eyes. Depending on the client and the project, poise and elegance will never be out of style.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

Aside from leading FRAMED Magazine, recently I shot for The Weeks, who opened up for Kings of Leon at an almost private concert at the House of Blues this past October. Just think about it - awesome music, shooting photography, and hanging out with the band! 

What is your personal style?

I have to wear black all the time, mostly black. I'm in love with the darker and edgier clothes, like Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester and Kris Van Assche. And no, not that I'm of the punk culture or because I'm gothic, it's more of a uniform type of thing. I would say my style is edgy/tailored/casual/minimalist? I'm usually wearing dark jeans and a black button-up shirt with a decent number of rings and bracelets. I used to wear ankle boots most of the time, but they can be hard to work in, so you'll sometimes see me in Vans or combat boots. I dress up from time to time, but since I can't find the right jacket for me, I'm designing my own!

What genre does your work focus on?

Although I see the need to be versatile, my work is definitely not commercial. I feel commercial work restricts me. I'm aiming more towards high fashion and live/concert photography at the moment. I also like to consider that my portraiture work is strictly artistic.

What is your favorite band or song of all time?

I don't think I have just one. I usually use music to get into character for a particular project. Being classically trained in music and having experience writing and arranging, I have been able to really focus more on generating playlists that speak to me. My all-time favorite genres are Southern rock, trip hop and French house.

What is your most embarrassing moment professionally?

Kind of ironic, being the one responsible for all the fashion direction and production, and I had a failed wardrobe. I was interning for a professional business network, during which I was responsible for the fashion production of a corporate event. After the show was done, we were at the step and repeat for photographs and I was wearing a smaller sized blazer that one of the photographers decided to come closer to 'style' us out and tried to button my blazer... It wouldn't close.

Sylvia J. Stankowski started her career in the Upper Mid-West. She graduated Costmetology School in May 2011, and though her career is fresh, she has had the passion, drive, and skill to take her places beyond where others have gone within the same amount of time in the industry. Her love of art has cast her on a journey beginning as a small girl, always with a pencil and a pad of paper at her side, to where she has landed today, freelancing as a Hair Designer in Las Vegas. She has traveled a road of fashion shows in Minneapolis, events and photoshoots all over Wisconsin and into Chicago, lookbook shoots, photo and filming projects in Vegas and more. Her two most notable achievements in Las Vegas, since her arrival in June, have been Hair Designer for all 12 ladies featured in the internationally distributed Coyote Ugly 2014 Calendar, and hair desginer for celebrity rap artist, Charli Baltimore. Sylvia's work has been featured in many fashion and beauty magazines, her newest accolade beign a featured hair expert for Seek.Me Magazine, developing hair tutorials for their readers.

What inspires you?

I find traveling to be super inspiring - to see the world in all its glory.

The best photographers I have worked with have always been the ones who convey emotion themselves the easiest.  I like when I can feel the energy of the shoot.

What product can you not live without?

I can't go a day without my L'Occitane skincare.  It's the best there is.

What is your favorite band of song of all time?

Favorite band is Arctic Monkeys!

What genre does your work focus on?

We specialize in beauty and fashion images.

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

Although the features that we look for change with the project, we are always searching for a special quality that will draw viewers into the image and make them feel something.  We believe that a "good" photograph prompts an emotion - and hopefully a meaningful one.  We find that this special quality results from a combination of elements, including confidence, expressiveness, humor, kindness, independence, and a unique personality.  Genuine subjects are essential to creating an authentic photograph, so it really comes down to feeling, which is why we try to meet all of the models we shoot ahead of time, whether the shoot is for a client or personal project.

Who is your favorite photographer of all time?

We are moved by photography that is soulful, elegant, and purposeful, like our own.  So we appreciate the works of many photographers for different reasons.  Some favorites include Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Vincent Peters, Helmut Newton, Jock Sturges, Irving Penn, Sally Mann and Patrick Demarchelier.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

Our most recent shoot is typically our favorite.  We learn from each new experience and are inspired by the people we work with and the final photos, so subsequent shoots benefit from our expanded creativity and perfection of details, making each session more exciting than the last. Also, the way that we feel at the end of the photo shoot determines how much of a 'favorite' it is so getting the right combination of energy and personalities on set is critical for us. We choose our creative teams, subjects and clients very carefully for that reason. We enjoy true professionals who know their craft and can relax and enjoy the experience of the photo shoot.

What inspires you?

We allow inspiration to change with our mood - one week we might be inspired by a unique type of light and the next week we are exploring themes present in eastern meditation.  While we draw inspiration from our own lives, we always leave room for the personality of our model to shine through.  In our experience, the best shoots are those with the perfect balance between the energy provided by ourselves and our team, and that of our model.

Makeup Artist of the Month:  Cathy Dung

 

Why makeup artist?

I love the creative process and being able to find that flow each and every time I do a makeup. 

Who is your favorite makeup artist of all time?

Alex Box, her ability to be innovative with color and stong technique makes her a true artist. 

What inspires you?

In a nutshell, life. Everything from the good and the bad, I draw from it all. The pendulum goes just as far back as it does forth - to truly embrace beauty you have to face the ugliness in the world. 

What product can you not live without?

Moisturizer - Koh Gen Do's Moisture Foundation. It's highly pigmented and exceptionally creamy so a little goes a long way. It's great for all skin types and looks absolutely amazing on as it covers without looking cakey; it's like your skin but better. Simply magical.  

What is your personal style?

I would have to say that I'm a girly tomboy. I hate wearing heels and always opt for my comfy boots or flats. I love wearing loose button up shirts paired with either leggings or jeans. Lately I've been on a maxi dress kick paired with my boots and over the knee tights (paired with a strong brow and either matte velvet mulberry lips or blood red - totally 90's grunge!)

Hair Stylist of the Month:  Jennifer Ziegelmeier 

 

Why hairstyling?

 For me, it was never ”why” hairstyling, it wasn’t ever a choice per say. My ability to do hair was just something that seemed to just come so naturally to me, although if my dolls could talk about the haircuts I gave them, they might tell you a different story! I didn’t own 1 doll that I didn’t take scissors to! I was always intrigued by Hair, all aspects of hair from styling, how it grew etc. I would do hair on family members as well as all the neighborhood kids, from styling to cutting, even though I had no official/professional training. I got a job at the age of 15 after school and on the weekends as a shampoo assistant in an upscale salon. However, with my knack and infatuation for hair coupled with the love for my new salon job, I can’t wholeheartedly say my intention was ever to become a Hairstylist professionally. I had really only looked at doing hair as a hobby so to speak. Eventually after trying 2 colleges and landing a job stocking beauty supplies at K-Mart, my mother coaxed me into enrolling at a local Beauty School

What inspires you?

I can literally find inspiration from anything, everything or anywhere and at any given time.  Inspiration is always around you. You just have to be aware, focused, open minded, creative and think outside of the box.  I frequently find myself viewing other talented industry peers portfolios (in the US, but mostly Canada and Europe because they tend to be a bit more ahead of fashion and trends) online, social media sites, to landscapes, colors and architecture.  

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

I cannot even begin to explain what an honor it was to have been chosen to work with Supermodel Carol Alt.  Not only is she a "Supermode" but Carol Alt was arguably the first person to ear the official title "Supermodel" This particular project/photo shoot was especially special to me, as I wasn't only doing Carol's hair but also her husband's.  His name is Alexi Yashin and he at the time was a star hockey player for the NY Islanders. To top it all off, as if working with two well known celebrities was an honor in itself, I was told the shoot would be for the publication's front cover along with a 10 page editorial.  This was an honor I will always hold dear to my heart.

What is your most embarrassing moment professionally?

In reference to my answer for my favorite project, I also had an embarrassing moment during this shoot.  20-30 minutes into styling Carol Alt, I noticed the PA set my hot coffee by my blow dryer cord.  Within a split second, the coffee spills all over Carol and I hear her husband yell 'Oh no! Not on the brand new Prada shoes I just bought you from Europe!' 

Who is your favorite hair stylist of all time?

This is the hardest question I may ever have to answer.  I am surrounded by so many talented artists in the industry today.  Instead of answering with famous names, I'm hoping my answer provokes readers to research and gain inspiration from iconic hairstylists.  They are Alexandre, Kenneth Battelle, Christiann, Aldo Coppola, Irma Kusely, Sydney Guilaroff, Sam Lapin, Leonard Lewis, Luis Llongueras and Vidal Sassoon. 

Wardrobe Stylist of the Month:  DajaMStyld (Daja Meadows)

 

Why wardrobe stylist?

I have honestly been wanting to style since 9th grade. I design also so it kind of just made sense. I styled a lot of my friends for prom and everyone came to me when they needed a wardrobe change so styling just came naturally.  

What inspires you?

I live in Los Angeles so everything inspires me from graffiti, architecture, people, and art. I love looking at a painting and visualizing how nice it would look if it was a piece of clothing.  

What do you look for when selecting a model to work with?

When selecting a model I look for what makes them who they are. In the industry, being sexy is not everything. A gap, a streak of hair, bone structure - all of this can make a person. I look for people who stand out and don't look like the typical. 

What is your favorite store to shop in?

My favorite store to shop at is Top shop because of the forecasting. They know what's in season and sell it for a price people can afford and a lot of vintage shops on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. They have one of a kind outfits so you'll never catch another person in the street with the same thing you have on. 

What is your personal style?

My style is a lot of jeans, heels, leather, and jewelry. I love wearing some boyfriend jeans, a white v-neck, Lester jacket, and some nice heels. You look edgy without trying. And being a stylist you need to be as comfortable as possible without looking comfortable

ASK JOEY: Add Photos To Your Portfolios

I'm surprised to see portfolios with only a couple of photos.  It's important to show off different looks - you never know what the photographer or agent is looking for.  Who knows, they might see your look and get inspired to do something new!  If you are a fashion model it's one thing, but if you are a commercial model, you really do need a variety of photos.  This means different types of photos with different background, facial expressions and outfits.  Don't hesitate to show off your different looks, but make sure they don't all look the same - who wants to see that?!  Change it up! 

MAMBO
Last November I signed with a reputable modeling agency in Miami.  I was excited about this opportunity, however my setback is my age - I'm 26 and I'm only 5'8".  I was wondering how I could break into other markets without having to move or ways that I can speed up my career.  Could you please look at my portfolio and give me some advice?  Thank you very much!

 

You need to go more commercial, which means you need to change your portfolio.  If you are with a fashion agency, have them introduce you to their commercial department.  But I think if you change your book, they'll automatically send you out to more commercial castings.  You should also ask your agent to send your portfolio to agencies that they work with in other markets.  That way you have a introduction with them without actually having to go there -  if they end up working with you, your agency would get the mother agency commission.  In all, speak up - let them know what you're looking for.

You photograph well but you only have one photo in your portfolio.  You need more to work with.  You know what you're doing as far as acting goes and taking workshops.  Now get into the commercial end of the business.  You need to start testing with photographers to put together a legit portfolio for TV and commercial print.  Then go out and find an agent.  You're a good type for the market.

I have a question, what is the best way to go about getting represented as a print/commercial model in LA?  I know that I will never be a fashion model (I'm not tall or super skinny).  But I would love to do print and commercial work.  Is there any advice that you can give me, like what photos to add to my portfolio?  Thanks for your help! 

 

You have too many of the same photos.  Cut your photos in half and do new pictures.  If you want to do commercial print, then you need to have a variety of photos with different expressions.  I would get a variety of clothes, backgrounds and smiles.  Then go out and find an agent.  You have a good look though, so I don't think you'll have trouble getting work.

JENNIFER MCLEOD
I am a bit shorter for a model.  I'm only 5'3".  I wanted to know how/who would even represent me?  I have a couple of friends that are Ford models but they are very strict on height.

 

First off, your profile says you're 5'10".  If you are 5'3" you should start by changing your height on your portfolio.  Usually anyone that falls under 5'9" is in the commercial modeling category.  This means that you should hone your acting skills to keep up with the competition for commercial work.  I think you have a good look - the next step would be to get represented.  There are a lot of commercial agents, it's a big market.  Good luck!

I received an email in my MWN mailbox.  Unfortunately I deleted the email and don't remember the name of the sender.  My question is how can I tell if the person sending or saying that I was selected for some fashion show is legit?  I know that MWN tries to be very cautious in allowing any spam to go through or be sent to any of the people on the network.

 

Sometimes it's hard to tell if a casting is scam or not.  The right thing to do is to let us know immediately if you feel uneasy about a message.  You can email support@modelwirenetwork.com and our team will immediately look into the user who sent out the message and determine if they're fictitious or not.  Ultimately, you should really trust your gut feeling.  Usually when a model land a big gig, it's because they have gone into a casting and have met with the photographer - at the very least you would have talked to someone on the phone.  Why would someone hire you for a modeling gig without seeing you in person?  Listen to your intuition and if anything, please let our team know immediately.
