Submit your questions!

I love getting questions from you guys.  Keep them coming - if you'd like me to check your portfolio out, please submit a question to me on my ModelWire Network profile.  Remember - update your portfolio frequently.  It is also important that you fully fill out your Sizes, Stats and About Me section.  Especially with our scouting feature, agencies are looking for full profiles.  Share your personality - but more importantly, put your best photos up.  Hope to see your questions!

ASHLEY CHASE
I'm loving your blog!  So much useful information you're sharing, it's awesome!  I spent the summer updating my portfolio so most of my pictures are recent.  I'm ready to start looking for agency representation in my area (Los Angeles).  Can you recommend any that you think I would be a good fit for?  I'm tall (5'11"), 115 lbs, but I'm also not 15 years old.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest going more commercial in your photos.  I love the photos, but the market you're trying to reach is out of your reach.  Change your direction and go more commercial.  I think you'll find more success.
LINDA H.
Hi Joey, I'm 5'11", runway physique but for some reason it's been hard for me to get signed to a top agency.  Am I too commercial looking?  What agencies are best suited for my look?  I'm also saddened by the fact that I just turned 22 and still haven't gotten to established model status.  On the other hand, I think I look young.  Are the sands of time running out for me?

I don't believe in the sands of time!  You photograph really well - there's got to be an agency that likes your look.  Unless I'm missing something, you seem to have everything going for you.  All I can tell you is keep trying and testing.  If fashion doesn't work out then definitely add some commercial looks to your portfolio.  Again, I think you have the right look.
TWIGGY NOMSA
Hello, I'm 5'8" and just turned 21.  I have been having a hard time signing with a top agency.  I walk in, I show my portfolio and they love the look but they always tell me it's not what they're looking for.  Can I make myself have a look they are searching for?  Can you review some of my pictures?  Is there something I'm missing?

Your pictures aren't that great.  You need a whole new portfolio.  Start from scratch.  Check  your measurements - if your hips are really 38", then fashion agencies will not represent you.  I think you are more commercial, forget high fashion.
JAMES AARON
Hello Joey, I have been modeling for awhile now but haven't been getting the 'big' jobs and I feel it's because I don't have an agency behind me.  I am in the process of updating my port but would love if you could tell me which agency might suit me best and what looks I should take in the future.

James, I can't tell you which agency will suit you.  There are thousands and they all want different looks.  I would focus on the ModelWire Directory and see agencies in New York City.  They'll get you jobs.  Your look is more commercial and not fashion.  Don't be lazy!  Go out there and work for it.
DIMATHAMAN
Hello Joey, how's it going?  I think this site is just splendid.  I am an aspiring model and I believe I have a great, different look.  But being new, I have a question - since most photographers charge, what can I do to make myself desirable as a model to shoot tfp (trade for print)?

You're a good looking guy.  Hook up with photographers on ModelWire Network for free testing.  At 5'10" you're a commercial model.  Fix your books and go take some acting classes to help you out with commercial modeling.  I suggest you get some people involved on MWN and do a photo shoot - it benefits everyone.
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

DJ Karl Lagerfeld

It's a new mix for Karl Lagerfeld.  He just launched his affordable new line Karl yesterday.  Check out the famous style icon's campaign video with him acting as a DJ and models dancing in his (super cute) designs.  Models Arizona Muse, Saskia de Brauw, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Sui Hei and Anja Rubik star in the music video as well.  Love this...it's amazing to see Karl do something different!

The 100 lb. Dress

French designer Stephane Rolland has created a dress that weighs over 100 pounds (and is made from 147.5 feet of fabric)!  It is part of her Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2012 line and she debuted it at her Paris fashion show last week.  Rolland's inspiration came from kinetic artist Michel Deverne - she wanted to show off the movement of the materials.

Photographers - stay focused!

It is important for photographers to choose an area of focus and concentrate on that.  Perfect a certain area - art directors usually want someone who can do a job, not several jobs.  Also, keep in mind that just because you have a nice camera doesn't mean you are a photographer.  Learn how to use your camera to take the best photos you can.  Most importantly, take photos you enjoy taking.  If you enjoy fashion - stick to fashion!

CHANTAL HASSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Hi, my name is Chantal and I'm studying at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara.  I would love to get your input on the few pictures I posted on your site.  I'm also looking for a possible internship with a good fashion photographer.  Any recommendations?

I love your photos.  The lighting is beautiful, the models look amazing and the fashion stands out.  Everything seems to be working.  You're selling it really good.  I think your work as a whole is great.  You've definitely got talent.  If I were you I would start looking up big photographers and network/intern.  Get out there and send them your work - I don't think you'll have any trouble finding anything.

ALBERTO LEOPIZZI
I would sure love an opinion of my work if you have the time.  Of course I have thousands of images, these are just some of my favorites.

Everyone look clean, but there are too many things going on (it looks a little complicated).  I like the ones that are in the studio more than the ones that are on location.  Your choice of models isn't the best.  Simplify your photos.  Book models to test and develop a style.  You don't seem to have a direction or a style - focus on getting that.
MARIO DICATALAN
How do I market myself as a fashion photographer in San Diego?  I want to become a working photographer!  First I want to assist A-List fashion photographers and see how they work professionally.

I think your best bet is to go to Los Angeles.  You are so close.  Find a photographer and them your work.  You need a better selection of models.  You're all over the place.  But I must say that I love your photos with the art work in the background.  Those are very unique.  Best of luck.
JYOUNGFILMS
What do you think of my pictures?

It doesn't show much.  They're sexy, but that's probably because they're on the beach.  I love two.  The two with the blondes.  They look like posters - you should market them.  Broaden your horizon a little more - get out there and do more test shoots.

In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

It's a New Year!

It's a new year.  It's a perfect time to reflect back and revisit your career options.  Now is the time to truly decide what you want to do with your fashion careers.  I suggest picking out your best assets.  Stop trying to be something that you're not.  If you are a model, stop having so many different looks.  Come to terms with what your look is and stick with it.  Take your best qualities and bring them to the table.  It's time to take your careers seriously.  This means having professional photos, going out and meeting with agencies and really going for it.  If you feel weird about a photo - don't put it up.  Remember, it's not about the number of photos in your portfolio.  It's about the quality of photos.  If an agent signs you, they will take your strong points and work with it.  Put your best foot forward and let everything be.

SANDI
I'm excited that you're here to give your professional advice.  I appreciate your time.  Can you please give me some advice on what type of modeling market I should go for based on my look?  What agencies do you recommend for me to meet with?

I think you have a nice commercial look.  You're 5'6" so you're obviously not high fashion.  You have a beautiful face.  I love the pictures but you need a variety of shots to approach the commercial market.  Your pictures are more on the "glamorous" side - you need pictures that are more "girl next door" - commercial type photos.
TAMI MARIE
I just started taking modeling seriously.  I am currently working on my port and trying to figure out what my strengths are.  What do you feel are some things I can tighten up or try?

Based on your height and your pictures, I would say you are on the commercial end of modeling which means you should go and take some acting classes.  I would also suggest doing some more test shoots to get better photos.  Definitely take advantage of the hundreds of photographers on ModelWire Network - collaborate to update both of your guys' ports.
JENNIFER DOWDY
What is the age limit or cut off for plus size modeling?  Right now I am signed with a commercial agency but would like to move on to plus size fashion modeling.  I am not sure if that is possible at my age of 30.
Age doesn't make a different for plus size - it's all based on the look and the size.  Don't worry about your age, just go out there and try it out!
DON JUAN MARCOS
I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  I've been changing up my look.  I'm fit and love people.  I'm outgoing, full of life and into music - singing/rapping.  I started getting into acting and still it is like an engine that just won't start and I will not stop trying.  I know I belong in this business, any tips?

I think you have a nice look.  You're a little too tall for the fashion business.  If this is what your want, just keep pursuing it.  If it's your passion, go for it.  The clothes look good on you.  I would start by checking the ModelWire Directory.  Go and make contacts yourself - they're not going to knock on your door.
TAHIRAH ROSE
I am interested in your advice as to what modeling type I fit into?  And can my freckles work for me in modeling or even TV?  Any other advice you have for me would be great.  Thanks!

I definitely think you are the fashion type.  You have a unique look.  Freckles CAN work, there are not too many models with them.  Your look is different so you should present yourself to fashion agencies.  Good luck, I think you'll do great!
In the meantime,

Have a successful day!

Lindsay Lohan's Philipp Plein Ads

It's safe to say that Lindsay Lohan hasn't had the best couple of years.  But she seems to have put everything in the past - check out her ads for Philipp Plein.  She looks classy and actually like a grown up!  What do you think?  Has our beloved Lindsay turned over a new leaf?

Louis Vuitton Fragrance

Yes, the rumors were true!  Louis Vuitton is teaming up with master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud for their first fragrance since the 1930s.  It is confirmed that Cavallier-Belletrud has started work on the fragrance but there is no set date for its release.  Cavallier-Belletrud's past work includes L'Eau d'Issey, Dior Addict, Poeme by Lancome, and Stella by Stella McCartney.

The IMTA Convention - LA

The International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) is an organization dedicated to getting models, actors, singers and dancers discovered by talent agencies, scouts, managers, etc.  Founded in 1987, it is one of the original conventions that showcase talent.  Conventions are one week long and are held in New York and Los Angeles biannually.  This past week, ModelWire Network's Joey Hunter was in town for IMTA where he spoke with modeling agencies and got a sneak peek into some up and coming models.

Tell us about IMTA and what happens there.
IMTA is where kids go to fulfill their dreams.  They are able to interact with professionals in the industry.  This year there were over 150 agents, managers, casting directors and producers all looking for fresh talent.  And there were 500 kids (ranged ages 5 and up) who competed.  Basically the kids compete in categories which is like an audition - actors, dancers, models, etc.  Judges rate their talent and choose their favorites.  Based on their scores, the kids are asked to come back for callbacks where they meet with managers and usually get signed.
What is your involvement with IMTA?
Since the beginning, I've been asked to judge the models in three categories - runway, print and swimwear.  I also hold seminars and workshops for the kids and their parents where I prepare them for callbacks, tell them how to market themselves and let them know more about the industry.  I love IMTA.  It changes lives.  It's not everyday that a kid from Oklahoma can go to New York City or Los Angeles to audition, usually they end up talking to a secretary.  At IMTA, they are able to meet with hundreds of professionals and truly get seen.  After IMTA, the kids usually understand the business better.  It's a great platform for everyone.
What do you see is the future of scouting?
To be honest, I really think besides the few scouting conventions, online scouting is going to be huge.  Not only because it's convenient and easy, but the ability to sift through a mass quantity of talent makes our job way more easy.  Obviously with photoshop, you're going to want to see someone in person but it definitely beats going to a mall and scouting.  That's why I think ModelWire Network is so amazing.  It definitely is the forerunner for getting scouted.  Almost every agent at IMTA scouts through MWN.

Jason Wu for Target!

The time has come!  I feel like I've been waiting for this for months.  The Jason Wu collection at Target will be available on February 5 (but don't worry, you can probably buy everything for triple the price on Ebay the next day!).  The FULL collection can be seen here.

Katie Holmes' New Jewelry Ads

Mrs. Tom Cruise is the new face of H.Stern and her new ads are showing more than jewelry.  She is seen topless and actually quite beautiful.  In the past, Katie has done ads for Ann Taylor but this is the sexiest we've seen her.  Although the ads are only available in Israel right now, here's a peek!

Run Forrest Run!

Nike is reissuing the Forrest Gump Sneaker.  The just-released Cortez Classic OG are available again - yes, they are the ones that Forrest Gump wore in the hit 1994 movie when he ran across America.  I love these.  Where will you wear them?  Maybe to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant?

Happy Birthday Kate Middleton!

Our favorite Princess and fashion icon Kate Middleton turns 30 today!  The Duchess of Cambridge has had a good year becoming one of the most talked about (and loved) people.  Her birthday party, which was planned by her sister Pippa and brother-in-law Prince Harry is rumored to be 80's themed.  Happy Birthday Kate!

Levi's Instagram Campaign

Levi's is getting quite creative with their upcoming 2012 Brand Campaign.  They are using the photo social networking application Instagram to find models.  If you think you have what it takes to be the new face of Levi's, simply upload a photo of yourself and tag it #iamlevis.  Do you think this is going to be a new wave of scouting?
